Q & A with Ambassador Owner Liz Stark

We sat down with Great Lakes Health & Wellness Ambassador Liz Stark and asked her some questions about life and fitness.

Here is what she had to say:

1. Where are you from?

I'm from Westlake, Ohio! Dr. Aimee and I went to high school together!

2. What do you do for work?

I'm a Physicians Assistant at the Cleveland Clinic, within the department of urology.  I work at the Avon, Independence, and Main Campus locations.

3. Did you play any sports in high school or college?

I grew up playing soccer year round, and dabbled in track, swimming, volleyball and basketball. I continued to play intramural soccer in college and often join teams now.

4. What do you do now to stay fit?

To stay fit, I like to mix it up and do a variety of things. I do crossfit 3-4x per week. I help lead an awesome running group, Run Wild Cle, which hosts a weekly run. I often participate in pub runs when the weather is nice and usually ride at Harness Cycle once or twice a month. Recently I signed up for Class Pass and have been enjoying a variety of classes from Groove Ryde, Rise Nation, Yoga Strong Barre Fly, and other studios.

5. Favorite workout?

I LOVE a good chipper - a 30 minute AMRAP usually involving multiple movements. I also love our Run Wild workouts too - a 20 minute run, 10-15 minute body weight workout, usually with a lot of high fives and good energy. It feels like adult recess!

6. Anything you hate doing with regards to exercise?

I've completed two half marathons, but long distance running isn't my favorite activity. I have a hard time staying motivated and focused.

7. What is one tip for someone who wants to make a healthy change in their life?

My best advice is to start with SMALL changes. By saying you can NEVER eat dessert or you have to work out EVERY day, you're setting yourself up for failure. Set small attainable goals, like working out twice per week or not buying dessert to have in the house, and then work your way up. That way it's less drastic of a change and you don't end up in a spiral of guilt or shame if you "fail" because those goals are more attainable.

8. What are your hobbies/what do you do for fun?

For fun,  I enjoy planning trips and traveling - lately I've been on a National Park kick. I love trying a new workout or doing workouts with friends. I've also loved working my way through the Cleveland Brewery Passport by visiting each local brewery. On off days, I love a long walk through the Metroparks, around Ohio City, or by Lake Erie.

9. Do you prefer routines or spontaneity?

I'm definitely a routine person. I plan ahead and have a very detailed calendar; I get thrown off if plans change. I'm trying to be more spontaneous though!

10. Fun fact about yourself...

Fun Fact: I spent a year volunteering with AmeriCorps NCCC - a team based program that traveled to different locations to work on various projects. I lived and worked in a homeless shelter, did trail work on the Western States trail, fire prevention outside of Yosemite National Park and outdoor education in San Diego. It was a fantastic experience!
